Dear Gods, it's bloody cold this morning!! I didn't want to get out of bed because of it, but with the munchkin home, I didn't have much choice. Note to self: find out how much it's going to cost to have the gas turned on for the gas heater and soon! So, anywho... I'm going to start designing holiday cards today, and need email addresses to send them to. Because of the whole hyperhidrosis thing, it makes it difficult to make physical cards to ship out, as much as I would love to. All of my close friends will be getting cards designed specifically for them. Everyone else... If I have time, I will try to design something personal, but if I don't have the time or energy to do so, I'll send you a general card that I'll have designed for everyone one but not on the whole public level (that one will be displayed on dA and embedded here once December rolls around, but the others won't show up until after the holidays, if at all). I'm going to design these to be print-friendly, so if you want a physical copy of them, you can have them printed out. If you have no way at all of printing them and want a print copy, let me know and I will see what I can do. (All comments are screened so that you can just comment here with your email address.) This week, I have been mostly feeling: aggravatedCurrently in the Jukebox: Treasure Planet DVD By the way, hearkening back to my earlier post--this doesn't spoil anything, since you can see on the Yuletide list of requested fandoms that no one asked for it--I did not get assigned to write for Richard Adams's The Plague Dogs. I decided, when I accidentally included it in the list, that rather than redo my list I'd just go read the book once and for all, even before the assignments came out, so I got it from the library. I got through Ulysses easier than this. This is...guys, I have written some interesting metaphors myself in my time, some of them admittedly more purple than should be seen outside of crackfic, but this takes them all: ...Rowf's rump slid suddenly forward as smoothly as a turd from a healthy anus... I can't even facepalm. It's too squicky. |

| Nov. 28th, 2009 @ 01:01 am duty = motivation? | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| One of the discoveries I’ve made since becoming ill is that I’m strongly motivated by duty. My responsibilities to the muslings, for instance, kept me slogging through the days even when I was at my worst and would just as soon have not kept waking up in the mornings. Even now that I’m feeling somewhat better, my energy is still limited enough that I can’t do everything I used to, and what that means in practice is that I usually end up doing only the things I “have to” - where “have to” equals work and stuff for the muslings, but not reading and writing for fun. I’ve been leery of making any fandom commitments for fear of not being able to carry them off, but possibly a commitment is just what I need. So... if any of you want to tell me why I indulged my not-so-secret love for geeky t-shirts by wearing the one shown in this icon while cooking for Thanksgiving yesterday, I will at least try to write something for you. (Or the first one or two of you, if this is more popular than I expect. No promises on the timetable, though I’d like to put the last two evenings of the holiday weekend to good use!) ETA: A couple of people here and on LJ have already recognized tryptophan, an amino acid often blamed (not necessarily correctly) for making people sleepy after large Thanksgiving meals. If you didn't recognize the molecule or are arriving later and would still like to request a story you're welcome to, though I'm not making any promises about getting to later prompts. |

| Nov. 27th, 2009 @ 02:12 pm Socks, Dammit! | |||
|---|---|---|---|
Uh, yeah... So, I've been working on this 'pair' of socks for some time now. Obviously it was going to take a while anyway, simply due to the fact that I wear a US size 12 in women's (which means I actually have 12 inch long feet). I opted to go easier on myself as part of this, since these were the first socks I ever planned on knitting, and I found a pattern for tube socks, thus no heal turning required. (I have yet to find a heel pattern that I can understand enough to try to follow it.) Well, I have most of one sock now. I love knitting on DPNs (that's double-point needles, for you non-knitters), though. It works up so much faster for me than on straits. But I have yet to manage to actually get finished with even one sock. *sigh* Mittens... I can do mittens. Well, ones worked up flat anyway. That was interesting and really fun. One of these days I plan on trying to figure out how to do them on DPNs, and then work towards gloves from there. And well, all this basically boils down to...nothing important. I'm just frustrated that it's getting cold, and I had wanted to have my socks made in time for the Christmas holidays whenever we'd be visiting family. Normally I end up needing to take my shoes off at some point, and having handmade socks that I knitted up myself would have been cool. Oh well. Looks like I'll be going and trying to find myself a pair of socks instead. It's about the only time I don't just wear standard white crew socks. Also, I have a huge box of knitting needles that my grandma got me from the thrift store. It's all straits or DPNs of various sizes that I've noticed so far. I still need a good set of circulars to learn on. All the ones I've had were insanely cheap and would always tear up. Of course, I also need to dig out my crochet hooks and such. I can crochet much faster than I can knit. I can also do much more pattern-wise with crochet. I've been doing it longer, and am more comfortable with it. Things went slightly better than expected. But only marginally so. For one, I was able to get three hours of sleep this morning (which beats none). For two, I was able to wear what I wanted to today because it was actually on the colder side of things today. So I wore a turtle-neck sweater for the first time this season. I don't know what it is about those sweaters, but I love them. Add to that my new winter coat that is actually thick enough to keep me warm, and I was very happy. When it came down to visitations... Contact with my mother was highly limited this year. This helped improve things for me, as the two of us do not get along, even though I can be perfectly civil with her, she will do everything possible to piss me off at her. Though I hated to have to leave my grandparents so quickly... We then headed down the street by about two blocks to my aunt's house, where we ate lunch with my grandmother, dad, siblings, aunt, and cousins. My aunt's husband (I hesitate to say uncle, because he's a bastard and I don't consider him family) stayed out of it and was in the living room rather than the kitchen with the rest of us. This helped ease the tension of being at their house, and we actually had a good time. I also promised to head down to pick up my grandmother every now and then in the evenings and us go do something together. We used to spend time together while Sabam was at work. Now that he always has to have the car for work, it is impossible to do that anymore. From there, we went to visit Sabam's dad. Most of the family there had cleared out already, and his dad's wife was getting ready to leave for work (she's not a very nice lady, so this was in our favor as well). We got to spend some time with Sabam's dad with just us, Ronin, and Sabam's brother, so it was nice. Ronin came home with a bow and some money to buy him a practice arrow with. Grandpa likes to hunt, and wants to teach Ronin how. Sabam stopped at Walmart on the way back from carrying his brother home to get a couple of arrows. And Sabam's mother had called, saying she wasn't feeling well, so to hold off on us coming over, since Ronin would want to stay but she didn't feel up to keeping him tonight. So that was one less house to go to today. Which was good for me, because I was really starting to hurt. So, overall, a pretty decent day in the end. Let's hope Christmas Eve and Christmas Day turn out as well. And an interesting tidbit for you: my maternal grandfather's birthday is on Yule (December 21). So I'll be working on a present for him in the mean time. This post was posted at http://jackalibis.dreamwidth.org/97 |

| Nov. 26th, 2009 @ 10:28 pm And six days later, she exploded in a great cloud of superannuation! | |||
|---|---|---|---|
This week, I have been mostly feeling: Sated Currently in the Jukebox: She Moved Through the Fair -- Enter the Haggis That's right! In six days, on December second, I, Cluegirl, shall spontaneously become The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. (Line forms to the right, gratuities are appreciated.) For those hoopy froods who don't speak Hitchiker, I'll be turning 42. I expect it to be nothing at all like being 41 has been, but just in case, I've liquidated my assets, put everything into canned goods and shotgun ammunition, and have stapled my towel firmly to my elbow. With that, and my wand in my back pocket, I expect I'll be ready for anything. Except possibly zombies. Zombies take a little more preparation. As for what I want for my birthday? No frelling idea. I mean, there are the old standards, of course; I always get a bit giddy at just the notion that someone might illustrate one of my stories, or conversely, might write a story for one of my drawings. Collaboration is highly squee-some in my little world, y'see, and I swear that one day SOMEONE will illustrate the mirror scene from Pink Slip, and I shall expire of Happy on the spot. I could wish for world peace and the brotherhood of man, but I've noticed how shittily brothers treat each other, and as we all know, the last time the matrix was configured for world peace, it crashed and we lost whole crops to the logic failure. So that's out. But reining things back into the realm of the distantly plausible, I'd say I want for more or less nothing of note. I want to keep rolling on Tempus Fugitive. I want my cats and my snakes to stay healthy in the coming year. I want the resources to close up the hole in my house properly, and to begin the next major set of repairs (Hopefully before the porch falls entirely OFF Mandala House, thanks!) And most importantly, I want my friends who are in reach to join me for a Solstice party on December 19th, to celebrate both my birthday, and the Sun King's in one swat. The date is positive; December 19th. Save it, and if you can possibly make it to Troy, NY, do consider coming! And don't worry if you're not of the witchy persuasion -- I plan no heresy, just cake and shenanigans. |

I did make time to make a yummy dinner for myself from scratch: Chicken with sun-dried tomatoes in dijon-riesling-cream sauce Sesame noodles Spicy peanut butter soup Tart green salad with proscuitto and asiago and warm balsamic dressing Warm butterscotch-maple pudding I love mixing cuisines. |
